UPI Lite: What Is It? What Are The Benefits? Why You Must Use It?
In India, UPI is a simple, fast, and convenient mode of payment that almost everyone uses. To validate UPI transaction, the sender needs to enter a PIN; however, some users enter it incorrectly and some users worriedly enter it when in busy public places. As a result, the transaction either ends in failure or the user needs cash to pay. Not only that, entering wrong UPI-PIN thrice, can even temporarily block the user. To aid to this problem, NPCI with RBI approval introduced UPI Lite. Let's learn the nitty-gritty of it today.
What Is UPI Lite?
UPI Lite is an on-device wallet approach of UPI and to transact with it, users don't need a PIN. This solution is developed without compromising the user experience and security for small-value transactions (up to 1000 rupees per transaction). Users can get this feature in almost all the UPI-enabled apps. As the name suggests, it is a Lite version, hence, with limited features and reduced functionalities.
Features
Even though it somewhat minimizes the features and benefits of UPI, it is very useful for those who are not comfortable entering PIN. The features of UPI's Lite version include:
- No PIN transactions
- No KYC needed
- No fees charged on transactions
- Works fine in no/low internet areas
Purpose
UPI Lite was introduced to make online payments instant, effortless, and superfast; however, it is meant for only small-value payments.
How Does UPI Lite Work And How To Load Money In It?
As earlier mentioned, it is like a wallet; hence, users have to load money to transact with it. The following steps help to enable UPI's Lite version and load money:
- Open the UPI App
- Click on Enable/Activate [This option is ideally found on the homescreen of UPI app; if not found there, just go to profile, then, tap on "Set up payment method", and select it]
- Enter the amount to load in UPI Lite and select the bank account [this amount will be deducted from the selected savings account]
- Authorise the transfer by entering the PIN
UPI Lite Auto Top-up – A New Inclusion By NPCI
As per a report, on November 1, 2024, NPCI introduced auto top-up feature in UPI Lite. With this, users can set a minimum balance, and every time, UPI Lite balance is equal to or below that minimum balance, money will automatically reload in it from the linked bank account. User will decide the reload amount too (must not exceed 2000 rupees and 5 top-ups are allowed in one day).
NPCI introduced UPI Lite X too for small-value transactions without network and PIN dependency.
How To Transact With UPI Lite?
After enabling UPI's Lite version, following are the steps to make a payment with it:
- Open the app
- Select the person you want to pay, or enter a mobile number/UPI ID, or scan a QR code
- Select “Pay”
- Enter the amount
- Select UPI Lite in “Choose account to pay with”
- Hit “Pay” and complete the transaction – no PIN needed
At the time of paying, ensure that the beneficiary's UPI app supports UPI Lite. On successful completion of a payment, users can see a “Payment Done” or “Payment Successful” message on the screen.
Transaction History of UPI Lite
The transactions made with UPI Lite are not visible in the bank statements; thes are rather visible only in the particular app – users can only see the amount they loaded in it from the bank account in statements.
Disabling UPI Lite
In order to disable it, users need to select UPI's Lite version from the homescreen or profile section of the app and hit "Delete or Disable" option.
Remember, at the time of changing mobile device or number, users have to disable UPI Lite first to push back the remaining amount to the savings account. In the new device, users can again enable it freshly. Similarly, with the new mobile number (if linked with bank account), users can again enable it again and load balance in it to continue using it.
Banks And Apps Taking Parts In UPI Lite
47 leading banks including SBI, PNB, UCO, BoB, BoI, Canara, Axis, ICICI, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra, etc. are already live with UPI Lite. 20 leading apps, including PhonePe, PayTM, Google Pay, BHIM, etc. are compatible with UPI's Lite version. Get the complete list of banks and apps here.
Daily Limits of UPI Lite
A recent report denotes that UPI Lite has a capacity of 5000 rupees (initially it was 2000); however, on the first day, users can load 2000 rupees only (after the first 24 hours, this cap goes).
Moving on to the permitted amount for sending money, Lite version is only for small-value transactions. Maximum limit for one transaction is 1000 rupees (earlier it was 500). In one day, maximum transaction value can be 4000 rupees (each transaction must be 1000 rupees or less).
How Does UPI Lite Differ From UPI?
Some basic differences between UPI and UPI Lite are:
| UPI | UPI Lite |
|---|---|
| Higher daily limits | Meant for small-value transactions |
| Real-time online payment system | Wallet-based payment system |
| Network and PIN-dependent | Works on low to no-connectivity areas and it does not require PIN |
| Allows P2P and P2M transfers including bill payment | Allows only transfers upto 1000 – best for essential transfers |
How Does UPI's Lite Version Benefit the Users?
The benefits of UPI Lite includes:
- No PIN Needed, Yet Very Secure – Though transactions with UPI Lite do not require a PIN, they are safe as the system is NPCI-powered. Users enter the amount themselves, allowing them to monitor each transaction throughout.
- A Clean Passbook – Since UPI is widely used for transactions ranging from ₹1 to ₹1 lakh, bank statements often appear cluttered. Transactions completed using UPI Lite do not reflect in bank statements, allowing users to manage less important transfers within the UPI app while keeping high-value transactions separate.
- More Payment Success – As UPI Lite does not require a PIN, payments do not fail due to incorrect PIN entry, resulting in higher transaction success rates.
- Lesser Load on Bank Systems – UPI Lite reduces pressure on core banking systems since it works like a wallet, where funds can be spent only through the app.
- Refund Facility – Since UPI Lite functions as an on-device wallet, users can claim a refund from the respective bank if the mobile device is lost. After verification, the bank credits the amount back to the user.
Wrapping Up…
RBI and NPCI assume that Lite version can enhance the acceptance of UPI further. UPI is a feature-rich app, and people residing in low connectivity areas are unable to access it 24*7 - the Lite version of UPI addresses this problem. RBI aims to make UPI a go-to online payment mode for all Indians no matter which corner they are residing. With it, reaching a billion daily UPI transactions will be more achievable.
Right now, online payment is at its peak in India – merchants are integrating payment gateway for faster payment collections. UPI's Lite version will continue this trend by allowing more users to make digital payments at lightning-fast speed.
