E-Mandate Meaning | How it Works | How to Register for E-NACH

Digital payment system has always aimed for ease for the payers and recipients. With this same intention, RBI, along with NPCI, introduced the eNACH Mandate initiative. This initiative frees the merchants from reminding their valued customers and the payers from reordering and repaying by simplifying and automating recurring payments in India.

What is eNACH Mandate?

eNACH stands for Electronic National Automated Clearing House, and it facilitates all interbank transactions across India. It enables merchants to collect bulk payments after a certain duration without any manual intervention.

In simpler words, eNACH automates recurring payments; as a result, the recipient does not need to ask the payer to make the payments every month or after a specific period. Related to eNACH, eMandate is the consent that the payer gives to the bank with eSign so that it works as an authorization for auto-debits of a recurring transaction.

An example will simplify eNACH Mandate further:

A customer has to give permission once for the autopayment of bills/EMI, school fees, subscriptions, etc., after a specific time – this one-time permission is eMandate. On receiving the eMandate, an amount will be automatically deducted from the customer’s account in the upcoming months. The recipient, too, can skip reminding the customer to complete the payment so that the subscription continues.

What is the Eligibility Criteria for eMandate?

For eNACH Mandate, a person should have:

  1. An a/c with any bank offering eNACH Mandate services
  2. Adhaar card linked with the same a/c
  3. A mobile number linked with Adhaar and bank a/c
  4. A mail ID
  5. A good standing balance in the account (some banks require)

How to Register for eMandate Registration?

In order to get started with eNACH Mandate, the customer has to register first and for this, the customers need to:

  1. Visit bank’s website or open the mobile app
  2. Select the recurring payment option
  3. Fill up the eMandate form with correct details
  4. Complete the authorization (with physical or eSign/Adhaar signature or API Mandate)
  5. Review and confirm the details

After the form submission, it takes a few hours to get approval from the bank, and as soon as the bank approves the request, the customer receives a notification.

How to Edit or Disable eNACH Mandates?

Customers can edit or disable/cancel eMandate anytime through the website as well as the mobile app. As soon as a customer disables it, it will cease all the automatic payments from the next time onwards.

How Does eNach Mandate Work?

Once confirmed, the amount mentioned in the form will be automatically debited from the payer’s account and reach the recipient’s account on the said date. So, the customer’s subscription continues – the utility bill or Fee is paid on time without visiting a bank or doing an online transaction.

The participants of eMandate process are:

  • NPCI
  • Sponsor banks (that facilitate eMandates)

  • Unlimited Period – Long-term memberships, subscriptions, etc.

For all these eMandates, there are Credit and Debit eMandate options.

ECS Mandate and its Challenges

eMandate was introduced by replacing ECS (Electronic Clearing Service) Mandate. It requires the customers to physically visit the branch, fill out the form so that they can initiate the process. Not only that, these forms were manually checked before approval, which unnecessarily delayed the entire process.

  • Took around 7-8 days (sometimes 25-30 days) for approval
  • High possibility of rejection
  • Need to restart the process in case of rejection

So, these are the dominant reasons why eMandates came, and right from the time eMandates came, these are widely used.

Advantages and Benefits of eMandate

In short, the prime advantages of eMandate system are:

  • Auto acceptance and fast activation
  • Very low failure rates
  • Regulated by RBI
  • Wider data security
  • Streamlined cash flow
  • Auto-reconciliations
  • Secure
  • Higher customer retention
  • Reduced alternative costs
  • Friction-free and easy payments
  • Saves customers from late fees
  • Assists in both short and long-term financial planning

Difference between eNach and eMandate

eNACH and eMandate are two different terminologies; however people often use these interchangeably. eNACH is the framework with the ECS network through which banks process recurring payments and NPCI controls the eNACH system.

eMandate, on the other hand, is the process through which a customer authorizes a specific amount of debit after a certain time, and banks solely control this process.
